recording [May. 9th, 2007|01:08 am]
i'm finally on the way to doing what i want to do with my life, i think. this summer i'll be putting out a record (perhaps an EP) but a record none the less on my own imprint. it will be produced, engineered and mixed by yours truly. i haven't written here in a while...but i needed to tell the world...i'm finally content with being discontent...details as they come.

Top Ten Albums This Year (pending anything really really major) [Dec. 7th, 2006|01:50 am]
2006 was a relatively slow year as far as good new releases go, but these ten stood out, spoke out, sounded out and were by far the most stellar.

10. Fucked Up-Hidden World-The only hardcore album i liked this year. period.
9. LCD Soundsystem-45:33-Much more than the workout mix nike tagged it as, james murphy's 45 minute epic keeps DFA fans drooling over the next full release.
8. Joanna Newsome-Ys-Easily the most eccentric album i've listened to in awhile, Ys is putting the freak back in folk. or something.
7. the magnolia electric co.-Fading Trails-Jason Molina's best yet under his Magnolia Electric Co. moniker, fully realizing the sound he has been working for.
6. Johnny Cash-American V-The Man Came Around, left, came back, and created some of the finest albums in the last decade. While some awkward song choices somewhat marred his previous american recordings, American V is the Johnny Cash we all loved. The recording has been described as listening to the Man in Black die on Tape. While it is somber, the song choice reminds you of what a fighter, lover and singer Johnny truly was.
5. Belle and Sebastian-the life pursuit-A great release way back at the beginning of the year. It stuck somewhat to form with Dear Catastrophe Waitress but with a much more realized sound. The album was a return to the instantly likeable while keeping with the darker more dense pop of Dear Catastrophe Waitress.
4. the black keys-Magic Potion- the best blues rock band in the last decade.
3. Loose Fur-Born Again in the USA-This album is musically and lyrically different from tweedy and co. It lacks some of the experimental ingenuity of the first record, but makes up for it in a truly astounding pop record.
2. Tom Waits-Orphans-A three disc compendium of Waits recordings during the last few years. Simply a must have. Just under 60 songs have been categorized into three discs Bawlers(ballads), Brawlers(Americana goodness) and Bastards(everything else). It came out too recently for me to call it the album of the year, it just hasn't gotten enough plays yet, but its certainly getting there
1. Sonic Youth-Rather Ripped-sonic youth, i mean sonic youth. where were you all my life. oh...making great records? oh...you started before i was born? oh...you're still making relevant AND original music more than 20 years after you started? oh...record of the year? thats right, record of the year.

hmm [Oct. 23rd, 2006|01:16 am]
i don't really know when i became so unhappy with the university of new haven. it was almost like overnight i fell down into a hole and got stuck and realized it wasn't that i couldn't climb out that was the problem. the real problem is there's no one hereto help me out of the hole. i'm frustrated with the innability of the program to educate. i haven't learned much that i haven't learned from myself. the whole purpose of coming to this school was to record. i do more on my own time than i will in class. i don't like to cry and bitch about life, but i'm unhappy and there's not much of a solution right now. i'll probably end up staying in new haven until i graduate. because i'm not sure i could take a fifth year of school if i had to transfer.

[mood | drained]
[music |devendra banhart]

assuming i work 5 (monday-friday) days this week i will have worked 19 days straight. mixed into this equation are 8 days of gigs, sometimes (more often than not) multpile gigs on the same day. i am past the point of feeling tired and/or sore. i don't feel physical exhaustion, but simply know its looming around a corner, waiting for me to forget to drink my water, or be on the backside of a 900 pound piano with no spotter. i saw blood last night when the guy i was loading a truck with fell five feet from a loading dock ramp that slipped from the dock. that could have easily been me. ow. still, life is good. there is much joy in doing what i do, and the people are actually really nice (james murphy). i made 800 dollars in the last four days. and three hundred the weekend before that.

all this being said.

i could use a vaction.

school starts soon. i want to start up a real (alt)country band.

i need to get out more. i think vermont the next two weekends, along with much drinking and smoking and overall merriment.
